We believe that all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). While all scripture is important and none is to be neglected, some portions of scripture establish foundational, fundamental, cornerstone truth. Acts chapter 2 is one such portion of scripture. It chronicles the birth of the New Testament Church through the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. It records the first message of salvation preached by Peter to the people gathered in Jerusalem. It gives us a historical account of how the people obeyed the gospel and became born-again Christians. It then gives us a clear picture of how all the new believers continued to grow in their newfound faith.
Do you want to grow spiritually? Are you striving to reach your fullest potential? Are you committed to being all that you can be for the Kingdom of God? Are you ready to experience all blessings and promises that God has for you? Acts 2:42 gives us the timeless pattern and model for growing as a disciple of Christ. Spiritual growth must be a priority in our lives. Only through continual spiritual growth do we experience the fullness of God’s purpose in our lives. Whether we are 12 years old or 112 years old, we must keep growing in God. Acts 2:42 shows us how.
The new believers in the book of Acts grew in their newfound faith by continuing steadfastly in Doctrine, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer. Let’s look briefly at each of these 4 pillars of discipleship:
Doctrine. Doctrine simple means “teaching”. The new believers in Acts continued steadfastly in the apostles teaching. They were devoted to the teaching of the Word of
God. They were committed to a daily regime of the study, discussion, reading of and meditation on God’s Word. If you want to grow spiritually you’ve got to continue steadfastly in the WORD of GOD. We all need a healthy diet of GOD’S Word in our life. To be successful on the Christian Journey we must become intimately familiar with the Word of God. We need to Study it, search it, memorize it, hide it in our hearts and get it in our spirit.
We get a healthy diet of God’s Word primarily through 3 three means:
1. Faithfulness to our local church services where God’s Word is taught
2. Regular involvement in a small group that studies God’s Word
3. Our own personal, daily study and reading of God’s Word
If you are serious about spiritual growth, make a commitment today to becoming a student of God’s Word. Be faithful to the Wednesday and Sunday services of Faith Apostolic Church. Get plugged into a small group right away. Don’t let one day pass without a time of personal study of the Word of God. Turn the television off; shut down the computer, lay down the magazine or book; unplug the Xbox and get out your Bible. Establish a time for daily, personal devotion. Set aside some time for family devotion 2 or 3 evenings a week. You may want to take half of your lunch hour to read your Bible. Some enjoy listing to God’s Word on CD or on their mp3 player while commuting to work. There are many ways to get a healthy, daily diet of God’s Word. Our daily commitment to the Word of God will give momentum to our spiritual growth. Let us follow the pattern of The book of Acts Christians. Their example challenges each of us in the 21st century to build our lives upon the timeless and unchanging Word of God.
